This photograph and letter mark a short portion of a longer exchange between the New York based artist Philip-Lorca diCorcia and Buster Matthews, an inmate in a Texas penitentiary. Their relationship was born from a case of mistaken identity: Buster sent a piece of short science fiction to diCorcia’s address, believing it to still belong to its previous literary agent tenants. In this portion of the correspondence, diCorcia mailed Buster only a photograph of a snake, upon which Buster wrote in the margins and returned with a short letter.
Philip-Lorca diCorcia is an artist living and working in New York City. He teaches at Yale University.
